Greensboro summers are beautiful, sticky, and brutal on braids. If your install starts looking fuzzy by week two, you're not alone. Here's the routine Pauline recommends to her Triad clients to keep braids fresh in Greensboro humidity from day one through week six.
Step 1: Tie Down Every Single Night
A satin bonnet or scarf is the single most important habit. Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out of your hair and roughen up the braids while you sleep. Skip a night, and you'll feel the difference by morning.
Step 2: Keep It Light
Heavy butters and creams attract dust and lint, especially in humid weather. Use a water-based leave-in spray once a day and a few drops of light oil (jojoba, grapeseed, or argan) on the scalp twice a week.
Step 3: Cleanse Without Soaking
Around week 2 to 3, dilute a sulfate-free shampoo with water in a squeeze bottle and apply directly to the scalp. Massage gently, rinse, and air dry. Avoid soaking the lengths, that's where matting starts.
Step 4: Tame Frizz with Mousse, Not Gel
In Triad humidity, gel flakes within hours. A light foam mousse applied to dry braids smooths flyaways without buildup. Tie down for 20 minutes after applying for a polished finish.
Step 5: Know When to Take Them Down
Most styles should come out by week 6 to 8. Pushing past that in summer humidity almost always means tangled new growth and unnecessary breakage.
